How do sessions work?
Typically most treatments involve three sessions, though this is not always the case if a patient’s goals for therapy adjust or if there are other issues arising which the patient would like to work on.
The first session is 1 hour to 1.5 hours long and is the session in which we discuss your issue. In the first session I aim to understand your motivations and your perspective and understanding of your particular problem. I will also explain hypnotherapy to you and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you need to ask. There may be time to experience hypnosis in the first session. The first session is absolutely crucial in formulating an effective treatment programme for you. Any information you give me within this session, within subsequent sessions or over the ‘phone is treated as absolutely confidential and permission to contact your GP will be sought beforehand, should that contact be necessary.
The aim of the first session is to:
• Gather as much information as possible about you and the issues you would like to address.
• Agree on a specific outcome for your sessions, so that you can see the progress you are making.
• Set achievable goals that will make a real and lasting difference to your life.
• Give an indication of the likely length of your treatment.
• Provide an explanation of the way I work, and what the process involves.
• Answer any questions and discuss any concerns you may have.
Session Two begins with a discussion and recap. Sometimes patients find that there have been positive changes after the first session and may wish to alter their goals for therapy. The rest of the session is devoted to hypnosis and working on your particular issue. A variety of techniques will be used both in hypnosis and also out of hypnosis. At the end of session two you will be given some simple ‘homework’ to do. Self-hypnosis is taught in session one or two depending on each individual’s particular situation.
Session Three begins with a discussion and recap with an opportunity to revisit goals and discuss any outcomes. The session is then devoted to further hypnotherapy, honing the work done in session two and/or concluding the work done. Techniques for maintaining positive change are utilised within sessions two and three.
Depending upon the outcomes and wishes of the patient further sessions may be required. The number of sessions can be more accurately assessed during the first session.
