Uses of Hypnotherapy
Issues with weight, food and eating
The diet industry is a multi-million pound industry. Millions of people embark on diets every year. Dieting can lead to an unhealthy focus on foods as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ and causes the dieter to become obsessed with reward and denial. This leads to cycles of ‘being good’ and ‘falling off the wagon’ which is exhausting, depressing and usually futile – and the real reason it’s a multi-million pound industry? All that repeat business! How many people do you know who have taken part in just ONE diet? Most ‘dieters’ are experts on all regimes.
To permanently succeed in reducing your weight, you need to make changes to your eating behaviour and activity levels that you can easily incorporate into your everyday life.
Hypnotherapy can be a powerful aid to permanent weight loss, by helping you change the way you think about food, your body and exercise.
Phobias
Fear is one of our most basic responses. It keeps us safe in dangerous situations and causes us to be alert and responsive, so that we can react. However, when a fear begins to take over our lives, becoming an irrational response to a stimulus, then it is no longer just a fear but a phobia. Phobias can disrupt people's lives in quite significant ways. They can cause an overwhelming sense of fear and panic, and can grow to become the focus of that person's life.
Unless you suffer from a phobia yourself, it can often be hard to understand the panic and fear that is triggered in a phobic response. This is especially true when the thing that triggers the response is something that most people deal with on a regular basis without a second thought. The symptoms can range from feelings of panic, racing heart, dizziness to an overwhelming desire to run away to avoid the problem, no matter how inconvenient it may be to do so.
Having a phobia has nothing to do with a lack of bravery or confidence. It is in fact an anxiety disorder that lives deep within the individual's subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy utilizes a number of techniques to help the person become aware of the pattern of their behaviour and to overlay their fear with other more appropriate and comfortable emotions. It has been used effectively for treatment of many different phobias including fear of: dentists, flying, spiders, heights, claustrophobia, water, open spaces, large buildings and structures, buttons, animals, childbirth. There are many other phobias, too numerous to list, and most of them will respond to a hypnotherapeutic approach.
Anger
Anger is a basic human emotion and serves many purposes. However, when anger is out of proportion to the situation, or stops us from getting our point across in an appropriate way, it can be a problem.
Anger can also transcend time. We can carry anger with us, allowing it to impact and influence our current life and even our future, when the event or issues that caused it in the first place exist in the past. Sometimes it is hard to let go of the anger we carry around and it can become a burden that we wrap around ourselves that stops us from finding true happiness and contentment.
Hypnotherapy can provide you with tools and techniques to let go of the anger that serves no benefit or purpose and to help you focus on the positive aspects of your life.
Smoking Cessation
Does this sound like you? You know the very great risks to your health in continuing to smoke and you really want to stop but can’t quite do it? Hypnotherapy is an extremely effective way to give up smoking because it does not rely on willpower. Willpower does not really exist, it only appears to exist when your subconscious mind agrees with your conscious mind.
When you 'give something up', you naturally feel deprived but if your unconscious mind knows the benefits of stopping smoking then the need for willpower is less of an issue. This allows you to more easily make permanent changes to your behaviour so that smoking is something you have no desire to do.
Panic Attacks
Panic attacks are a common and serious psychological condition. They can occur as a symptom on their own or they can present associated with another condition. There are a number of physical symptoms present during a panic attack and these include shortness of breath, choking sensations, palpitations, chest discomfort, sweating, nausea, temperature fluctuation, shaking.
Hypnotherapy utilizes a number of very effective techniques for managing the physical and psychological aspects. Though you may recognize a number of the symptoms above, a Hypnotherapist can only treat you when you have a GP’s specific diagnosis of panic attack. Beware a therapist who does not insist on this!
IBS
Up to 1 in 4 of the general population is affected by IBS at some time during their lives. The symptoms bring not only physical problems but, with some sufferers, can contribute to existing, or even cause, emotional problems leading to isolation and distress. Although IBS is frequently a stress related disorder it's roots are physiological and the symptoms are real.
Hypnotherapy is a non-intrusive, safe, comfortable and cost effective treatment used alongside mainstream medical and dietary advice. In the hands of a trained therapist, hypnotherapy can increase self-esteem, confidence and allow the IBS sufferer to begin a journey of self improvement and symptom management. By changing negative thoughts and feelings to positive ones, and becoming emotionally equipped to move away from the symptoms and thoughts of IBS, sufferers can begin to move forward with positive changes.
As with other health issues, it is important that before commencing with a course of Hypnotherapy IBS is diagnosed by your GP and his or her permission given, so that any other serious illness with similar symptoms can be ruled out.
Habit control
Everyone has some bad habits, and for most people these are harmless and have no real impact. However for some people, bad habits can start to have a negative impact on their lives, damaging self-confidence and self-image.
Habits can become linked to feelings of relaxation, confidence and even courage. A person may often feel as though they have no ability to control these behaviours because they are done almost without thinking.
Hypnotherapy can help free you of habits such as nail biting, thumb sucking, hair pulling and skin picking, by working with you to disrupt the pattern of unconscious behaviour surrounding the habit.
